General Description of Yalikavak
A small, picturesque fishing village measuring about 1¾ mls N to S and ¼ ml E
to W. Based around a picturesque harbour, it has a tranquil, unhurried air and
retains a Turkish flavour despite the influx of tourism. The traffic-free centre
is crowded with a mixture of modern and old restored buildings housing bars,
restaurants and hotels.
Market/Suitability
Middlemarket and budget-minded tourists. Families and individuals who want a
quiet, relaxed holiday with more than just the hotel to entertain them.
Location/Contact
Location: On the SW coast of Turkey, at the point where the Aegean and
Mediterranean Seas meet. Near the N tip of the Bodrum peninsula, 12 mls NW of
Bodrum itself. Airports: Bodrum 42 mls E, Dalaman 147 mls SE, Izmir 160 mls
N. Position: On a large curved bay, backed by hills covered in gorse
that flowers bright yellow in early summer. Dialling Code: 252
Accommodation
A variety of pensions and hotels offering a variable range of facilities.
Most of the higher-rated hotels tend to be slightly out of town (many clustered
together ½ ml N) and offer a wide range of sporting activities.
Beach
Starting slightly out of town, long narrow beaches with earth-coloured sand
mixed with shingle. Gently shelving so suitable for children but no lifeguard.
Sunbeds and parasols are all free as either owned by the council or by
particular hotels, who expect you to buy a drink if you use theirs. No water
sports.
Shopping
Mainly souvenirs and tourist supplies, available in many places including a
small covered arcade near the harbour. Popular items are Turkish delight, fruit
teas and fake designer handbags. Large fruit, vegetable and clothing market
every week.
Entertainment
Daytime: beach; activities provided by hotels. Nightlife: mainly bars;
some hotels have their own discos; watching the often impressive sunsets. The
resort is generally quiet.
Eating Out
Many restaurants serve fresh fish in a relaxed atmosphere by the harbour.
Simpler restaurants inland are less pricey.
Public Transport
Dolmus (minibus) services run both ways along the coast and to Bodrum. A
regular bus serves Bodrum every ½ hr. Sufficient taxis which charge the same as
everywhere else in the area.
Local Excursions
From Bodrum, ferries to Greek islands of Kos and Rhodes; coastal cruises;
Ephesus; Pamukkale, with its fantastic limestone formations; villages and bays
of the peninsula.
