Turgutreis
General Description of Turgutreis
Named after the great Turkish admiral of the same name, Turgutreis spreads
for about 3 mls N to S along the coast and ¾ ml back from the sea through a
valley planted with citrus groves and vegetables. Olive, fig and almond trees
grow on the mountains behind the town, and small islands lie off the coast to
the W. The terrain is largely flat and the ambience sedate. The harbour is the
main focal point of the resort with a selection of shops, casual bars, cafes and
restaurants lining the promenade. The huge marina adjoins a handful of shops and
bars targeted primarily at boat owners. A few miles outside town are the ruins
of a walled city, ancient fountains and graveyards of the Myndos
civilisation.
Market/Suitability
Luxury to middlemarket resort. Families and middle-aged couples. Popular with
British and French.

Location: On the SW coast of Turkey, at the point where the Aegean Sea
meets the Mediterranean Sea. 15 mls W of Bodrum town. 167 mls S of Izmir. 45 mls
SW of Bodrum airport. 130 mls NW of Dalaman airport.

Accommodation
Predominantly 2- to 4-stars, with B&Bs and simple pensions; the majority
situated along the beach and busy seafront road. Some newer luxury 5-star
properties are now available in the centre and on the outskirts of town.
Beach
The main beaches begin at the harbour and extend 4 mls N and 8 mls S. Mainly
dark sand, pebbly and rocky; gently shelving, so popular with families. A
prevailing breeze makes the resort a favourite with windsurfers. Parasols and
sunbeds, jet-skis and water-skiing are available. A lifeguard is posted in the
central section of the beach.
Shopping
Mostly in resort centre: small souvenir shops, leather, jewellery, rugs and
general stores. Bazaar every Saturday.
Entertainment
Daytime: beach-orientated, some water sports.
Nightlife: live music,
nightclubs and plenty of bars.
Eating Out
Choice of local cuisine; good selection of fish close to the harbour.
Public Transport
Taxis, local buses and very cheap dolmuses (minibuses), with frequent
services to Bodrum, Gumbet and around the local area. Buses travel to various
destinations, and on certain days there are ferry trips to Datça and Didim as
well as daily boat trips to a nearby island.
Local Excursions
Greek Islands (Kos, Rhodes); coastal cruises; Ephesus; Pamukkale with its
limestone formations; villages around the peninsula. Most tour operators arrange
their own programmes.
